The captain taught Francis all about the sea and how to control the ship and how fast they were going. However, in 1560, Francis’s master died. But he told Francis that the boat was now his so spent the next few years as captain of that boat. But then he decided that this got uninteresting after a while and sold his boat and moved to Plymouth. In 1566, Francis Drake made his first voyage to the New World. H was second in command on a ship owned by the Hawkins family. But when they reached the New World, the natives forced them out because all the other Natives had been enslaved and they thought that Francis was going to enslave them too. They returned to England, went back with a stronger army, and had success. Then in 1576, Francis Drake believed that he would make a Journey to the Pacific Ocean. However, a trip like this would be expensive and he would need queen Elizabeth’s help. Elizabeth agreed to help him. However the voyage was a secret because if Francis got into trouble then the queen’s royal brother, would want to kill Francis for having brought trouble into Spain. It was such a big secret that Francis didn’t even tell his own crew were they were going. On December 13, he set sail. His plan was to sail west where Magellan went and then head north to Peru where he would capture Spanish treasure then head back to Spain. He went to some Islands first and captured a Portuguese ship named the Santa Maria. Then after loading the treasure into his own five ships, he set sail again. Finally, after 60 days at sea he spotted the coastline of South America. In June, they visited Port San Julian. This was a sheltered harbor. So far, the trip itself was going fine except a seaman named Thomas Doughty. Francis accused Doughty of attempting to kill him. Francis had a judge decide wether or not Doughty was guilty. The judge found him guilty and they chopped off his head. Then on August 24, 1578, Drake’s fleet made it to be Magellan had sailed into a narrow, but quicker strait.
