Coral Reef

...ith the coral reef allowing the animals to nurse, feed, and breed there. “Reef fish tend to be brightly colored. Although thousands of fish inhabit a healthy reef, within any given reef there are usually few individuals of any one species. Scientists believe that the dazzling colors may help the fish communicate and attract a mate. Some reef fish even change color when they are excited or threatened” (DuTemple 33). The beauty of the coral reef affects the fishes in a positive way because it allows them to communicate with one another, which show without the coral reef, life under the sea wouldn’t be so easy. The type of source that was difficult to find on coral reefs was a fiction book because I didn’t start off my research project by reading a fiction book that I liked. Instead I started of by what I was interested in. On the local library’s site, I searched through the catalogs but most of the book I found was either checked out or not available to me (the books were in another library). I was searching wit the keyword ‘coral reefs’ so I made it broad by taking away ‘coral’ and on the list of books that contain it was, “Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale” where I found a good amount of quotes for my project. With help from Sarah Chen, I found where the book was located in the library and checked it out. I found cute quotes such as, “When the fish were hungry, they ate tiny krill. There seemed to be endless supplies of the delicious shrimp. Rainbow Fish only needed to glide gently through the water with his mouth open to catch as many as he wanted. It was a wonderful life” (Pfisher 4). The quote tells of how fish feeds at the coral reefs because the amount of food that was supplied. There was also a quote mentions the reefs are a place of security, “The terrified fish fled, racing towards a crack in the reef for safety” (Pfisher 14). The most difficult source for me to find on coral reef was the poem. It was very difficult for me because basically most poems I found was based on the ocean and include a bit of the coral reef. I looked for days on the net and became hopeless, but I still manage to search for it. I couldn’t find any books that contain poems about the coral reef or the ocean. Many of my results were websites of instructions of oceanary activities for elementary teachers. I finally change my keyword, ‘coral reef’, into just ‘reef’ to unlimited my search. I actually found more poems than I expected. I found one that enjoyed and even read it five times over. A quote I found that explained what kind of place is a coral reef was, “A place where life abounds in every shape and size, Where miracles seem to happen right before our eyes” (Jones 1). This tells me that coral reef is like a magical place and full of life. Another quote that mad me think of all the bad things human have done to harm these delicate reefs is, “But man pollutes its waters and dumps his garbage there, Spills oil on its surface and doesn’t see to care. That oceanic fisheries have collapsed in many places, Because of overfishing and the lack of protected spaces” Jones 1). If people take time to think about it, the coral reefs have fought to keep itself alive and natural beauty for ...
