Husbands and Wives in Drama

Euripides showed Medea without the means to fight back; then revenge and evil acts were the only comfort for her. Shakespeare was inspired by unusual, special and unique women: They are well-known as "Shakespeare ' Heroines". Desdemona, the principal female character in "Othello the Moor of Venice" is one of them. Desdemona is described as an obedient, faithful and docile wife. She obeys her jealous husband, Othello, without any opposition. After marriage, Desdemona is guided by her husband and she follows him without any question or resistance, even to death. Modern drama is also occupied with married couples. Modern playwrights, in Europe as in America, are concerned with husbands and wives. Ibsen in "A Doll House" portrays an ordinary married couple in the European bourgeois society. Ibsen shows the wife, Nora, as an unfit, futile and uncertain woman.
