...n throughout all of his pieces through a playful characteristic. One of Matisse’s main focus and intrest in many of his pieces is of the human figure. One of Matisse’s last piece, complete with many of his common trademarks, is a piece “Roses”. Matisse finished “Roses” while in Nice, France during the late 1940’s. This piece exemplifies a nude woman stretched out on a bed. Matisse’s choice of medium was oil on canvas for this portrait, of course as many if not all of his pieces. The composition of this portrait consist of the nude woman on the bed, a night stand with a vase of flowers, and a painting on the wall. Matisse main focus, besides the nude woman, is his choice of lines, shapes and color throughout the rest of the piece. The woman lays on a bed which is altered to look like a bed of roses by the design of the bedding, which gives the portrait a sense of romanticism. Matisse also created a portrait within the piece to create a balance of the composition. The portrait is a abstract design of lines and vivid colors which gives the piece a sense of dominance. Matisse throughout his pieces seems to distort the proportion of the human body...
