Innovation and the art of Planning UPS is constantly striving to find new ways to streamline and improve its business to create more efficiency and increase profits. Most recently a new System was installed called PAS. This system is being implemented in distribution centers worldwide. The PAS system allows a computer to scan a package, and assign it a package car to be loaded. By implementing this system UPS is creating an environment where anyone can just walk up and load a package car without training (Center shows significant gains after DPS/PAS redeployment, 2005). Management and Supervisory teams use this new system to their advantage. Where planning is involved, "PAS" allows a supervisor to know in advance when a particular car is going to have a large quantity of deliveries to one stop and gives the manager the ability to plan accordingly to accommodate for this shift in bulk. This automation and innovation in technology allows the drivers’ entire day to be planned out so the trucks can leave on time. Before, at the end of the sort day, the manager would have to walk the cars and see if anything needed to be changed. They would then unload and reload cars to make room for the unexpected increase in bulk to one place. Managers at the Clearwater distribution center agree that the bulk sort feature alone has paid for the PAS system and saved double work and overtime by the loaders and the drivers. By using this new tool, the manager can re-organize the days schedule to accommodate for the extra boxes. Before, managers were pulling people from their stations to help others when a bulk order arose. This would cause that person's station to become "stacked out" which means boxes stacked everywhere and the loader cannot even move which is a safety hazard. Another feature of the PAS system is that it recognizes bulk orders, and labels each one with a number. When the day's data is down loaded to the keypad, it will tell the driver the exact number of boxes for any location. In the past, the driver might have missed a box in a bulk order. When the driver discovered this error, he had to return to the place and deliver the package (New technologies old problems, 2005). This PAS system is saving on drivers’ hourly rate and allowing UPS to deliver Top Notch customer service. Innovation and Leading it PAS does add a level of leadership quality throughout the parcel delivery system. By providing, more information quickly to m...
