...ght alongside the ocean. Right away you get the intoxicating smell of the ocean. As I get off the freeway and enter my surf spot I can’t help but think I’m in Hawaii; the weathers picturesque, and the gorgeous beach is covered in palm trees. Another reason I like Ventura so much is because the waves are usually really nice. There are two major surf breaks that I always surf at. The first one is called the Ventura Harbor. The harbor is squeezed between two jetties on the outside of a bigger harbor full of giant cargo ships. The harbor is a beach break and when the waves are big they are very treacherous but also very exhilarating. The beach itself is very beautiful; it is a long white sand beach that seems to go on forever. The second surf spot that I spend most my time at is called pipes or “C” street. There are two major breaks at this location. There is a mean right sided wave as you walk up the beach this one is pipes and there is a mean left sided wave on the other side of the beach which is stables. The water in Ventura is always frigid ranging from fifty-eight degrees in the summer to forty degrees in the winter. So unlike Hawaii, I am forced to wear a wetsuit and booties to keep myself from getting frostbite. There are sharp rocks covering the beach and the current is very strong. It is sometimes so strong that I have to constantly paddle in order to keep myself from getting dragged and tossed into the pier. On the other hand when the waves are big you can get one of the longest rides in California. Sometimes you can catch a wave up at pipes and ride for almost forty five seconds, and end up on the other side of the beach. The waves are not always fun and games though; the waves in Ventura are very strong and if you get caught in the middle of a big set, you’d be wishing you were dead rather than having to go through that. Just think, a huge wave crashes right on your head and pulls you down tossing you around like a rag doll for about thirty seconds.
