These questions continually ask, why do you like him so much? What is it that he does that makes you so attracted to him? Are you so awestruck by his looks that you know nothing about his actions? The speaker tells her friend that she is too “eyesick, voicesick, breastsick / to understand there is no hope for you” (6-7). Her friend is so in awe of his looks that she can’t see that he doesn’t like her at all. Cone 2 In lines 20-22 the speaker implies that her friend must be dreaming and hearing voices to know that this guy likes her, because in reality it is not happening. The speaker then inquires, “Do you have roses for brains” (27). This statement suggests that the guy is just a nice guy, and he is not just being nice to her, she is not getting special treatment, and that it is just his personality. A final plea is then stated to ask the friend to come back to her senses in line 31, “Have you come unhinged.” The final lines states, “is anyone home” (32)? This is strong because it is basically asking, are you even listening to me? Throughout the poem the writer only puts commas, and leaves the question mark for the end. The reason the writer may have done this was to make the poem a continuous statement; which then makes the end really strong, to seem as though the person the speaker is talking to is not listening.
