"I have heard, too, that the monster's scorn of men is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none."(167-168) When it came time for Beowulf to fight Grendel he decided to use no weapons. Grendel terrorized the Danes for twelve years until Beowulf ripped off Grende'ls arm with his bare hands. Beowulf has extraordinary physical strength wich is one of the main reasons he is considered a hero. He has fought in numerous battles and was victorious until his last. "They have seen my strength for themselves, have watched me rise from the darkness of war, dripping with my enemies' blood. I drove five great giants into chains, chased all of that race from the earth. I swam in the blackness of night, hunting monsters out of the ocean, and killing them one by one; death was my errand and the fate they had earned. Now Grendel and I are called together, and i've come." (151-160) In his arguement with Unferth he tells of how he lost the race with Brecca.
