Sandy and Her Beautiful Sisters
...tiful of them all” (l. 83) But this new lifestyle ends sudden when she gets pregnant with Danny. She chooses to keep the baby and it at this point Sam Prince enters her life, after Mrs. Fairey recommended him. The short story is very similar to the story of Cinderella. Her name, Sandy, sounds like the short version of the name Cinderella and her life is very similar too. As in the story of Cinderella, Sandy does all the dirty work in the house and serves her beautiful, superficial sisters. They never do anything in the house, except for putting make-up on and have male visitors. And when Sandy gets her prince she leaves the two sisters to nothing. Mrs. Fairey is just like the good fairy in the fairy tale. Even her name is pronounced the same way as a fairy. She is the one helping and caring for Sandy. When Sandy is pregnant, Mrs. Fairey tells her to make a fabulous bewitching meal that will make Sam Prince love her. “[…] You’re going to cook for Sam, cook such divine magic things he’ll fall in love with you, marry you and never let you go, and if he does, of course, he will make you a handsome settlement […]” (l. 160) This point also shows us that this is a modern fairy tale. It is not odd to get a divorce in modern time, but it is certainly not an option in the old fairy tales. Getting pregnant outside a marriage was likewise not an option. Sam Prince is equal to Prince charming in the story of Cinderella. He is also mentioned in this short story as prince charming (l. 221). The fairy, Mrs. Fairey, sets up a meeting and Sam Prince (the guy Sandy’s two sisters were interest in) gets his Limousine driver to pick Sandy up and drive her to him (to the big dance in the story of Cinderella). Sandy’s cooking skills can be compared to the glass shoe. Sam Prince is a publisher and publishes mostly cookery books. Her skill fits perfectly to his favourite books, as the glass shoe fits perfectly on Cinderella. Sam Prince takes over Danny’s business in more than one way, his publishing company but also Sandy (and her child). All through the story, the fairytale quotation “Once upon a time” is used, But at different stages in Sandy’s life. The first, “Once upon a time there were three sisters, two of whom were beautiful” (l. 1) describes how Sandy felt her story began, growing with two beautiful sister, being the not beautiful girl who did all the dirty work. The second “Once upon a time there were three sisters, two of them were beautiful, the third was the most beautiful of them all” (l. 83) shows us her goals, what she wanted to achieve in her life. The last “Once upon a time there were three sisters, two of them were beautiful, the third had everything she wanted out of her life” (229) shows how much Sandy has developed through the story. She has achieved happiness even thou...
