Government decisions affecting country´s image

... on American soil, America will destroy it.” These words are simple; it’s something that everyone can understand. But Iraq is a different matter. There is no reliable evidence of an Iraqi connection to 9/11 attacks, despite extensive efforts to find one (Greenfield). There was of course a regime in Baghdad that the Bush administration, both father and son, have called “evil”. But it us one thing to strike at regimes which have been involved in attacks on your citizens and another to order attacks on a government you don’t like, one that has never attacked or even threatened Americans in their homeland. This is where the term “imperialism” kicks in. The Oxford dictionary defines imperialism as the policy of extending a nation’s authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony among other nations. This attitude is why most people, including my friends and fellow South Americans dislike the United States. I’ve always thought that we, as humans and imperfect beings, look for the negative side of everything. It’s very easy to ignore the merits but very easy to point out the mistakes, and this case proves to be a great example. What I say to them is that they can’t judge a whole nation by the actions of its government. No one can deny that the United States has had a great positive influence on the world throughout history, but its government has had its fair share of mistakes. Given the fact that this invasion is recent and negatively viewed by many of us, we pay extra attention to it. I remember last year when I told some of my friends that I was leaving Costa Rica to study abroad in the United States, many of them were happy for me, because they’re aware of the educational standards of this country, but many didn’t understand my decision, especially since the U.S. is not as safe as it used to be and it’s government has lost a lot of respect from the rest of the world. The fact that it lost it by invading other countries is the topic at hand here. The international community sees the invasion of Iraq as an aggressive and lawless act.
