...ne of which we want to pay to go to a theater and see. The director (king Vidor) shows us in a way a natural and rigid film, no glamour or extreme heroics to anticipate. Instead he has successfully captured the distressing story of a common man in the crowd. He walks us through John’s (main actor) life from birth to his upbringing, courtship, marriage and family life. He also throws in moments of happiness and Miserable tragedies, such as when the couple’s daughter passes away. King Vidor has succeeded in capturing the everyday life of human struggles, unbelievable tragedies broken dreams and moments of temporary happiness. This film uses real camera shots of New York as well as some fabricated ones, some great aerial shots as well. It also features dialogue between the characters to give a more realistic feel of interaction. There are a wide variety of angles and shots used, such as medium shots, close ups and certain shots that force you to look down at the screen. My favorite shot from the movie was when the director takes the camera up from the bottom of the building to the top and eventually inside through the window. There are also moving shots filmed from the top of a bus as well as overhead shots (such as in the carnival). The director uses techniques like fading in and out of scenes, cutting and even at one point he tries to show what the actor is thinking.
