Media on Sports
... this and either they agree with what Mr. Artest did or they disagree. Either way he disappointed several fans. I read that Ron Artest donates money to children in his community and after all of what happened he was only worried about what the kids in his community would think. Sports play a big role in every ones societies. Fans read and see what a player does and they feel it’s alright. The media’s role on sports is to enlighten the people. The media has the power to make a people hate a player or love a player. The media shows everything, whether it be good or bad. The media also reflects to the past perspectives that were put on sports. Due to the media having all this power over sports and anything else of that matter, they may just have a bigger effect on our society. The media can change what a person says and make it sound like heaven or like hell. The people feed on what the media as new to say. Especially anything negative and it seems as if sports just keep giving the media something to talk about. The media’s role on sports is usually a bad one, probably because sports have been going down hill. The media doesn’t hold their tongue and they get to the bottom of everything, as SPORTS ILLUSTRATED does. In the past in sports, the media was known to dig for stories about players and nothing has changed. Except, in the past the media was almost looked at as a friend to players, now it’s sought out as the enemy. Many stories about today’s players are true, Allen Iverson did beat his wife, Sprewell did strangle his coach. All these facts help the media put things into perspective and they come up with the conclusion that most players are “hot heads”, “hoodlums” etc. Due to the media reporting all the ups and downs of sports this plays a huge role on what people think of players’ ethnics. Philosophically people don’t understand how these players were raised to act like this. The people misconstrue their actions and base what they think and feel about that person because of their actions. Their actions speak louder then words and the people listen to the media, thus messing with the readers psychologically. In amateur sports the St. John’s men’s basketball team has been on a rollercoaster. Starting from last year when the team went to play and ended up raping a lady in Pittsburgh. More then half the team was suspended and they were forced to forfeit several games. On top of all of that the coach was fired and the Red Storm looked hopeless.
