...y under them? The movie communicates this age-old debate of what a Filipino is, but, in the setting of the Spanish era. In it, Kulas accompanies the viewers in search for the answer to the definition of a true Filipino. As we encountered him, Diding, Tibor and Lim, one could see the uncanny resemblances they have to a seemingly foolish Filipino, to an ambitious Filipino, to a Filipino politician and to a Filipino-Chinese. The first (Kulas) represents how young our country is, and because of that very reason, our patriotism or love for our own land was not able to undergo the required time it takes to plant its nationalism roots deeply to each Filipinos’ hearts. The second (Diding), the ever-present striving motivated character who does all she can to achieve worldwide fame. The third (Tibor) is like the politicians in our time who thinks they are “good and moral” because of their societal status. Lastly, the ever hardworking Filipino-Chinese who was oppressed and laughed at by the Spaniards, even by his “fellow” Filipinos… (Well, look at them now!...
