General Zaroff : Character Sketch

General Zaroff also shows his high class by offering champagne, cigarettes and a wide selection of fine cuisines for his quests. As civilized as Zaroff makes himself seem his actions prove he is the complete opposite. Rojek 2 For the most part normal people wouldn’t consider Zaroff, a man hunter, very civilized. As Rainsford noted “Civilized? And you shoot down men?” (Connell50). Zaroff goes on the defensive when Rainsford makes his opinion clear about General Zaroff’s idea of civilized. Zaroff states that, “I treat these visitors with every consideration...They get plenty of good food and exercise”(Connell 50). General Zaroff’s idea of civilization is only to treat his visitors with consideration. That would make perfect sense if he wasn’t going to turn around and hunt them a day later. Zaroff is anything but a civilized man. For example, most civilized people don’t get bored from traveling around the world hunting and decide to start hunting humans for the challenge of it. Zaroff has traveled around the world, from the Rockies to East Africa just to have a gratifying hunt. “...This hunt had no longer fascinated me”(Connell 48). Zaroff soon finds he is bored with hunting, as this quote explains and wants to find a more dangerous animal to intrigue him in his hunt. “I had to invent a new animal to hunt”(Connell 48). General Zaroff does indeed invent his own animal to hunt, Zaroff had gone to the incredible extreme as to hunt human beings. While Zaroff’s actions speak to tell a lot about his personality his words to just the same. General Zaroff can be best described as sadistic, arrogant, and manipulative. His sadistic personality really comes out when he comments, “ I hunt the scum of the earth- sailors from tramp ships- lascars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels...” (Connell 49). The worst trait of Zaroff Rojek 3 is his arrogance. He claims that he is superior to other people of different races ,and it’s his job as a “strong” person to abolish the weak.
