...rogram has really helped to alleviate the welfare dependence burden on the U.S. The Federal Food Stamp Program has been around for about 60 years now. It provides unfortunate people with coupons redeemable for food at most grocery stores. Since, the changes made to it in 1996, some have decided to offer federal work study and basic educational programs to food stamp and welfare receivers. The Federal and State Unemployment Insurance programs give benefits to people who are able to work but cannot under situations out of their control. Each state presents an individual unemployment insurance program with in rules made by the Federal law. To be eligible for this program, a person must meet the requirements for wages earned or time worked during a one year period. In addition; Head Start is an early education program that was started during the “”war on poverty” in the early 1960’s. This program is based on the idea that all children should be given the opportunity to enter school prepared to learn. Even though the cost of child care is more expensive than child care it is less expensive than other school options such as; private schools. Head Start also teaches students and families about nutrition, mental health and social services. Section 4: Success or Failure If the government refused to create many different kinds of programs to eliminate poverty in our society; then poor families would definitely be unable to provide basic needs. The federal government and the government have achieved the goal of providing the poor with basic needs such as; food clothing, shelter and medical services. But, they have failed to actually provide a long term solution to poverty. Today, the percentage of the population below the poverty line is quite higher than the percentage of the poor 20 years ago. Also, the gradual increase in income and wealth inequality may also have contributed to higher poverty (page 13 of News guide).
