...roup did and still does today play a large role of getting drunk driving issue on the agenda in numerous states and making it a concern in the public eye. FATAL is another enormous influence on this particular legislation. Formed by our Kansas Attorney General, Carla Stovall, the group was specifically focused on harsher penalties for repeat DUI offenders. This group was the main actor which pushed the policy onto the agenda and then through legislation. It is no doubt to anyone that the effects of drunk driving are devastating ones, leaving families motherless, fatherless, perhaps even childless. Through the research I have thus far completed I have found these factors to be of the utmost importance concerning the political environment surrounding the issue. Were there not shocking turns of events correlated with alcohol and driving, there would most likely be little use for such adamant propositions of harsher DUI penalties. Furthering my research I will contact the proprietors of the local Drug and Alcohol Programs to inquire the past and present requirements of DUI offenders and how they are dealt with by the offenders themselves and implemented by the field staff of the program. Furthermore I plan to interview a Junction City police officer concerning the newly formed DUI Task Force enacted upon the area, and the elementary education program D.A.R.E., to find out what the content of such education is, thus being able to determine if such knowledge is adequate for our youth to understand the seriousness and penalties of driving while under the influence. These resources and the following being adequate on the grounds that they are derived from knowledgeable and experienced individuals and groups professionally trained in the area of government, law, and DUI legislation and enforcement.
