These statistics make me sad, particularly when I see them first hand at the animal shelter. As lucky as shelter dogs and cats are to be getting full meals and not to be sleeping on the street, or in uncaring and unloving homes, I know they cannot be happy sleeping alone without the creature comforts of a family. And the saddest part is that not all of them will be adopted. There are just too many of them. And as hard as it is to put some of them humanely to sleep, what is the alternative? Let them roam around the streets and get hit by cars, or bullied by children, or starve to death? By allowing your cat or dog to be left un-spayed or un-neutered, you have the potential to allow your pet to add to the 6 to 8 million pets which are euthanized each year because it is expensive to run shelters and is impossible to find homes for each and everyone one of those animals. We have basically made life seem as though it’s disposable by saying we are just going to get rid of these animals. Getting pets spayed and neutered makes them a better family companion. People often refuse to do this because they might have heard many myths. One myth I am going to mention is that they may think their dog is going to become fat and lazy. This is untrue because a fat and lazy pet is due to eating too much and not receiving enough exercise. Also, many people have heard that their pet’s personality might change. This is true, but their personality will often change for the better because they tend to become less aggressive toward people and other animals. Having a spayed or neutered pet reduces unwanted behavior problems and the pet becomes more loving and affectionate. Spaying and neutering also allows a pet to enjoy a longer, healthier, and happier life. It can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat. Getting an animal fixed makes it less tempting for them to leave the safety of their home and yard. The only side effects of it are good ones.
