The Russians were defeated in the Battle of Tannenberg and Battle of the Masurian Lakes. Austria-Hungary had made three unsuccessful attempts in 1914 to invade Serbia about this time; British army had seized the German colonies in Africa. 1,200 lives were lost in the sinking of the Lusitania, with the aid a German submarine. The U.S.A. then entered the war in April 1917 due to the fact that our economy was involved in the Allied Cause. American entrance was the great turning point of the war. Russia ended up withdrawing from the war due to the corruption of Tsar’s bureaucracy. The Russians then had a couple of revolutions. In March, the Petrogad Soviet was established. Nicholas was abdicated because of the order of Grand Duke Michael, his brother. In November, the army’s discipline had become laid back. Also, the Socialists had tried to give a provisional government. The Bolsheviks had increased in power as a result to Lenin’s return in April (1918). Germany attempted once more to defeat the French and British. The latter’s casualties numbered some 800,000 men. The reason that there was a German breakdown was manifold.
