When Michael signed with Nike, he signed himself to a $2.5 million deal for 5 years plus benefits. In 1986, Jordan changed the logo of the Air Jordan sneakers. In 1997, Nike unveiled a new marketing plan and Jordan became its own sub-brand of Nike. This plan also released a bunch of other types of Air Jordan sneakers. Twenty-one years later, people are still craving the Air Jordan sneakers. And because Air Jordan sneakers come in a variety of shoe types, people of all ages, for all sports can buy them. Another event that shaped this decade was when ESPN took off. Even though it was launched on September 7, 1979, ESPN didn’t come into the limelight until September 1995. ESPN became the first cable network to attain more that seventy percent penetration. The broadcasting company programs more than sixty-five sports, involving various ESPN platforms and what broadens the company’s event and news. ESPN became so popular, that it launched ESPN2, which presents more than 4,800 live and/or original hours of sports programming. It not only shows professional sports, but also college football and basketball. When launched in 1993, ESPN2 reached more than ten million households. In October 1997, ESPN was doing so well, that it launched another ESPN channel called ESPN Classic Sports Network, later changed to ESPN Classic.
