Cliff, we find, is the mediator between Jimmy and Alison, he tries to encourage jimmy to see Alison’s good points and compliment her instead of degrading her or insulting her. Jimmy acts childish with cliff, they mess around on the floor, Jimmy ends knocking Alison over hurting her with the iron. She tells Jimmy to leave and she and Cliff are left alone. After cliff cleans up Alison’s arm they share a moment, Alison tells cliff she is pregnant and doesn’t no how to tell jimmy if she should tell him at all, they share a kiss. Jimmy walks in on them but isn’t surprised. Jimmy admits he hurt her on purpose to Alison, he wants attention, he feels jealous and threatened maybe. Jimmy and Alison have a heart to heart and the audience may feel sorry for Jimmy and his insecurities. He talks about how he watched his father die giving the audience an insight to Jimmy’s past and how the past has made his insecurities. At the end of the act we discover that Alison’s friend, Helena, is coming over. Jimmy makes it obvious that he don’t like her, the will be conflict between jimmy and Helena. In this act there’s no conflict, jimmy looks for it but doesn’t get a response, with Helena the will be a lot of shown conflict. The plot of Act 2 The second act is about the development of the characters. This act is set two weeks later and in scene one Helena has been staying with Alison, Jimmy and Cliff. Helena seems opinionated yet she cares for Alison’s well being. Helena doesn’t like Jimmy, Jimmy antagonises Helena, Jimmy tries to get her to bite, eventually Helena does and they argue. Helena has been helping Alison around the house and has enjoyed it, Alison has enjoyed Helena’s help around the house because she has been feeling alone and maybe isolated. Throughout Helena’s stay she notices the closeness of cliff and Alison’s relationship, Helena talks to Alison about it and Alison opens up about how her and Jimmy came to be married, Helena is Alison’s best friend and will tell Helena everything and anything. The audience gets and insight to how Alison became so quiet and weak, on her wedding night she stayed at jimmy’s friends house, Hugh, and Hugh insulted her all the time and put her to the ground, also she was 21 when she met Jimmy and he appeared to be worldly known and he claimed to have wanted to marry her and so he would’ve done and he did. Jimmy hated Alison’s parents, and her parents disapproved of jimmy but they still married. Towards the end of the 1st scene jimmy reverts to the sympathy act, Hugh’s mother has had a stroke and wishes to go and see her and wants Alison to go with him, but Alison doesn’t want to go, and jimmy accuses Helena of trying to take Alison away from him. Helena and Alison go to church leaving Jimmy to go to Hugh’s mother. In scene two, Alison’s father has arrived to take Alison home, Helena sent for him, he appears to be scrutinising Alison’s home. Although Alison never asked Helena to send for her father she is happy he is there anyway. Thought the scene Alison and her father seem to have a heart to heart. Her father reveals that he hated the way Alison’s mother behaved towards Jimmy even if her father did disapprove Jimmy. Alison, we discover, Is just like her father, they’d both prefer to sit on the fence, and let things go on without them. Alison’s father is hurt because things have changed, but jimmy Is hurt because everything is the same. Again during the heart to heart Alison admits that jimmy is a control freak. As Helena enters the scene Alison is ready to leave with her father, Helena decides to stay. When jimmy comes home ,.Helena tells jimmy Alison is pregnant, but jimmy doesn’t care, and Helena and jimmy end up having an argument and Helena slaps jimmy which shocks jimmy to freeze.
