Marks reason of keeping quiet is because he knows that “one story, one pain, bled into the next [would spill] out until there [is] nothing left to hold.” However, by not telling anyone, Mark carries all the guilt and burden by himself which affects him mentally. Elena realises that “[Mark’s] limp is getting worse even tho he is healing.” This is because Mark feels the guilt of leaving his friend behind. After a long period of a slow and painful experience, Joaquin reminds Mark that “It’s a very complicated matter to be a survivor. Sometimes we must envy the dead.” Mark realises the problem with him and that the only way to fix it is not by finding forgiveness from others, but to pay respect to the dead and learn to let go of the guilt. Talzani is focused on helping the physically injured and makes the decisions of who lives and who dies. Talzani gives Mark advice about how to keep away and separate oneself from the horrors they see in front of them. He advises Mark that “without [he’s] camera, it’s not so easy.” Mark uses his camera to keep the dead in front of him away from reality so he can take pictures for his career. Mark felt like photography was he’s best job but it brought out the worst in him when Colin dies from a bomb that hit close by. It was too sudden and instant for Mark to handle.
