Today, I would like to explain how they used irony, whether they were believable or not and finally the purpose of the irony. In Chopin’s story, Mrs. Mallard received a telegram that her husband was dies in the railroad disaster. She did not react in an extreme way. She cried in her sister’s arms and then she went to room, alone. She sat down to her arm chair and looked thru the window. Her emotions, thoughts were flying in her mind. While she was looking thru the window, she felt (finally) the freedom. There are a lot of symbolisms in the story. Chopin successfully make the reader feel Mrs. Mallard’s feelings. When Mrs. Mallard said “free, free, free” as a reader you know that moment is the beginning of a new life. While you were thinking this, the story ended ironically. Her husband comeback. He did not died at that accident but Mrs. Mallard died because of the heart disease. This is what it was written in the book but as a reader you kn...
