At the start of the poem the poet starts with an effective visual opening; “With a ragged diamond of shattered plate-glass.” This is effective because it gives the reader the vision of the sharpness and the strength of a diamond and how that strength had just been smashed into tiny pieces. This also shoes hoe serious the incident is by the couple being so violently rammed into the shop window. Edwin Morgan creates a vivid image of the glass imbedded into the mans face by saying; “the young mans face is bristling with fragments of glass”.
