Essay writing is a craft. The following guidelines will suggest the rudiments only; it is up to you to develop your own style and approach. Your aim is to learn how to express yourself clearly, concisely, and logically on a given topic. In the context of essay writing, this means that you must learn to structure an essay so that it is focussed on a clearly defined problem (the topic) and so that it presents and assesses arguments pertinent to the problem. You will have to work at it. Keep your essay writing technique under constant review and try to improve it with each essay. Timing and planning are vital. Time is important from the practical viewpoint: student numbers are high; there will be a heavy demand for reading materials. Start your research early. You will also need time to think about and organise your essay.
