Would you let a drowning child die?
...heir countries? After all America isn’t perfect and it certainly does not have all the answers. The other argument focuses on the belief that other nations don’t deserve our help. Why should we help them we have or own problems? But that still leaves on problem if we don’t at least try to help other countries than who will? The United States is a world super power because it has a Strong economy and a strong military. These provisions are lacking in several other nations. This means that they do not have the means to help settle conflicts outside their borders. They may even be lacking the means to settle conflicts within their own borders. The question remains why should the U.S try to help solve conflicts outside its borders? Well why should you help save a drowning child’s life? What if you felt responsible for the child drowning in the water? Maybe you didn’t throw him in the water but you assisted him as he got in the water. An article written by Neta C. Crawford entitled “The Moral Duties of American Hegemony” describes the responsibilities of the U.S to Iraq. Crawford explains that the war between Iran and Kuwait had long term detrimental effects to Iraq. The U.S played a role in the war because they are the ones who supplied Iraq with their weapons. The sanctions that followed the gulf war had immediate negative affects on the people of Iraq. Crawford states “It was explicit U.S. policy to use sanctions to make sure that Iraq's infrastructure did not recover; resources supplied to Iraq might be used for military mobilization or to build weapons of mass destruction. Whatever we think of the effectiveness of the sanctions policy of constraining and containing the Iraqi regime, certainly the Iraqi people suffered an overall” The standard of living for the Iraqi’s plummeted as a result of these sanctions and the aftereffect of the war. Although it was the Iraqi’s who got themselves into trouble America cannot be held blameless. They encouraged them in their war efforts by providing them with weapons and information and then did not assist them in the sanctions. So does it really make sense to help the child into the water and then not help him when he starts to drown? Would you leave the child drowning in the water if you new that no one was going to save it? Well many people today might say why it is the job of the U.S to save everyone. Well who else will do it? There is no other nation as strong as the U.S. Ivo Daalder of the Brookings Institution said in an online article Is America too powerful for its own good? (the observer February 2002) “America's power is unrivalled. It has no military, economic, or political competitors”. So if other nations can’t help why the U.N can’t solve all the problems of the world? Max Boot explains this answer best in his article “Ameri...
