The scary looking man was the Devil him self; that’s when the Devil also tries to test his faith when he tells Goodman about how he knows and helped his father as well as his grandfather, and then how he also knows the gov’t. and all kind of people with high authority. As Goodman gets deeper into the forest he then begins see people he knows from the community, such as they who taught him catechism in youth and is still his moral and spiritual adviser. Goodman starts to realize what is happing to him and tries to resist and tells his self “what clam sleep would be his that very night which was to have been so wickedly, but so purely and sweetly now, in the arms of faith.” But he then begins to hear voices he recognizes like the minister and good old Deacon Gookin and hears them talking about the meeting. But he tries to not listen and tells his self “With heaven above and faith below, I will yet stand firm against the Devil.” Goodman then sees Faith and begins on his way again. When Goodman sees Faith he then says “my faith is gone ,there is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. Come, Devil; for to thee is this world given.” When Goodman says this it lets you know right then that he gives up in his wife and thinks there is no heaven. When he...
