His most famous work was The spirit of Laws which was published in 1748. This book was also popular but was placed in the index of forbidden books by The Roman Catholic Church. In this book he scrutinize the three main types of government republic, monarchy and despotism and the relationship between an areas climate, geography, and general circumstances and the form of government that evolves. This book shows how the government would best work as a democratic government. It explains human laws. He thought that a government would be effective if the people understand the meaning and importance of it. He believed that a democratic government was the best sort of government. Montesquieu also held that governmental powers should separated and balanced to guarantee individual rights and freedom. He drew his ideas from England where he lived for 2 years.
