The speaker uses compassion and truth when he describes the models emotions. ‘Yes, she is pouting about something all lower lip and cheekbone’ (st.6 ln. 82) he is creating a pouting face but is words are not robotic. However, he describes somewhat mechanically, what the models are wearing, he doesn’t use any form of figurative language he flat out says what they are wearing, as if he were doing an advertisement for Victoria Secret. ‘she is wearing a deeply scalloped flame-stitch halter top with padded push up styling and easy side zip top pants.’ (st. 1, ln. 7). The speaker does not leave any of what the model is wearing to your imagination, nor does he leave any of the way he perceives the model may be thinking or feeling. The speaker is lonely, so he gives the models lives that include him, he sees them there as objects for his imagination. One of the models tells him to go away. To help pass the time he makes a silent, interaction with them, wonders what they have been doing all day, what they have been thinking, or where they have gone. ‘Perhaps her ice cream has tumbled out of its cone onto the parquet floor. Perhaps she has been waiting all day for the sofa to be delivered…’ (st.6 ln. 84) Through out the poem however no matter how captivated the speaker is with the models there is a little devil on one shoulder telling him to keep looking and an angel on the other reminding him that the mail needs to be opened, or the music turned down.
