Touch Screen Based Grocery Information System for Emilu’s Mart
...ssions of the DCSSI was to help ministries incorporate safety requirements in setting up and using their information systems, with the objective of making them as independent as possible in this field. The CFSSI (new simplified abbreviation0 continued training actions undertaken by the CESSSI (Centre for Training and Advanced Studies on Information Systems Security) since 1986. it became the central player in a network designed to increase awareness on information systems security problems and provided training in the various aspects of this area, for the benefit of all government authorities. The CFSSI also has the mission of developing partnerships with higher education and further training centers. The CFSSI created an informal network of exchanges and mutual enrichment with respect to ISS training. The activity and education provided b the CFSSI were controlled and monitored by an Improvement Committee chaired by the General Secretary for National Defense and composed of civil servants and military staff. National ID cards with embedded Digitized Thumbprint and Photographic for all legal residents in the US was a proposal made by Larry Ellison, head of Oracle Corporation the California based software company. In responses to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The UK Home Secretary, David Blunkett was also considering proposals for the National ID card with the addition of integrated circuit microprocessor, the card performed data manipulations run cryptographic algorithms. The processor makes it possible to limit the amount of data any one official can access. For example, an ER doctor could view medical information and enter data about treatment(if the cards data storage device is read-write capable) but did not see security-related data (such as travelers flight history or a non-citizens visa status) that an airport or INS official might require. The more data on a card, the more valuable the card become to an identity thief. The card has also a barcode, officials who don’t have sophisticated optical reading devices could use this information in vertical and horizontal lines up to 2KB or more data, potentially including text, a photo, and a limited amount of biometrics. These barcodes were used, generally to code the same information that’s on the face of the card. The technology was virtually tamper proof, the biggest challenge for national ID system was ensuring the accuracy of the information used to build a database of names, biometrics, and the like. The Master’s thesis and software by Brian Ford and Kristian Lindahl entitled PIPECHAIN MA System on June 1, 2001 connects supply chains to information, which are suitable to manage the flow materials automatically on a real time set-up. The goal of this master thesis is partly to answer and distinguish parameters. Its goal is to investigate how the relationships are affected if several customers are considered instead of one. The thesis focused on safety and max time (i.e delivery frequency). As to what kind of probability distribution should be used, the normal distribution was chosen. The effects of fluctuation in lead-time were exclueded from the thesis. The supply of information is made continuous, fast whereas sub-optimization must be avoided. The materials flow in PIPECHAIN is compared to water flow since water distribution can be likened to an optimal distribution system. The system has developed a way to determine the safety stock. To limit the extent of the study, Lindahl determined how closely different kinds of flow. 2.1.2 Related Studies Local The thesis of Charito S. De Leon about a Computerized Record Management System for C.P Reyes Hospital learned that the manual operation of the existing system brought so many difficulties to the hospital staff. She concluded that the proposed system would eliminate redundancies and time-consuming task, which were very prone to errors. Reports can easily be made and retrieved as a source of information necessary in decision-making. It also improves the handling, updating, and processing of voluminous data. It also produces complete and timely information, accurate calculation of bills and organizes data that results better information. She recommended making a fully automated system and using networking in the system. The thesis of Arnold S. Archeta and Raffy Jose S. Slamatin concluded that the present system used by Sta. Agueda in the operation of business was inefficient and unreliable. The design of their proposed system has features and functions that will solve the problems under the existing system. The authors recommended that the company should adopt the proposed computerized manufacturing system to solve the problems defined and also further study be made regarding the system when the proposed system is no longer capable of handling the large number of records on the file. The studies of Dan Jason Chua and Mike C. Ocampo of AMA Computer University, Quezon City Entitled Inventory Sales Monitoring System of Sanyo Corporation in August 1997, focused in the achievement of maximum efficiency in the system process. The proponents perceived that transaction should use a window based computerized system to have easy data accessibility and responsiveness. Responding to the needs and demands of the modern times, the proponents made this study. Different methods of research like the descriptive method to determine and classify the different processes the proposed system and the library method in order to get more than just absolute printed materials that can be useful in analyzing different things related to the proposed system were used. The researchers also used the creative type of research, where it employed the implicit and stylistic approach in the analysis of human experiences. The study proved that the proposed system for sales monitoring system is the best alternative in tracking and printing information of the transaction made by the employees. The present system being used has the capability of printing keyword finder, and the auto assigning of account number, and a product number posted some problems to its users. This will separate the files and eliminate data redundancy; efficient data integration can be achieved through generating the reports on screen or on hard copies. The proposed study by Maribeth G. Hernandez, a Record Bar Transaction Manager, in 1999, found out that the software could contribute awareness to the society. The user is enticed in using the computers especially in field of business. All the necessary data were gathered by interview, library research, and books readings. The researcher made the following recommendations based on the findings of the study: 1. To add more information about the track record of cd’s and cassettes in the software. 2. To include more graphics and animation in the software to make it more attractive to the user. The software also featured utilities such as files and record manager, security protection, and other accessing related to business routines like report generations and record viewers. The file manager takes control over the files, its manipulation and protection, and it includes modules for providing means of data restoration in case of hardware failure. The security protection features was, integrated to define the extent of the personnel or user. To be sure, the software was developed thru Fox Pro version 5.0 to create its database system. The study by Shaina C. Devera, “Jers General" Merchandise (Computerized Military Accessory supply), provided an easy access of data and information about the products. Each available product was presented and the user was given a graphical view of each product, and the graphical results showed the variation in costs. The software acceptability was fast; moreover, any member of the personnel, even those who have little knowledge of database system principles can use it. Further improvements in computer technology enabled more people to lessen tedious activities and doing the same faster in a more interesting way. The system eliminated inventory levels with respect to the computer records were observed. This implied that the problem was due to the record keeping procedure. Furthermore, this system helped the merchandise to have enough stock of supply because of accurate information of data. The supply of information should be continuous and sub – optimization must be avoided. The study made by Ma. Victoria C. Dela Cruz, Nav’s Data Warehouse (File Maintenance System) in September 2002 at AMA Las Pinas Campus, stressed out the importance of File Maintenance in reducing economic and labor costs. This system improves the business procedures due to the automation of the system itself. In conducting the study, data were gathered through interview, survey, research, and giving out the questionnaires to beneficiaries. All data in here came from questionnaires that were used to get the feedback of the people. The proponents were broken down into 25% entrepreneur, 35% on-the-job trainees (OJT). The IT students who were surveyed are mostly from AMA-Las Pińas, some from AMA Makati, DLSU and Informatics. The survey result shows that the majority of the respondents find the software easy to use. The author needed the flexibility and capability of quick software transformation, thus the author opted to use the said method. The developer used visual basic 6.0 in implementing the software because of the flexibility it offers that can help the developer in achieving the goal of developing File Maintenance processes. If the entrepreneur wants the business in line with global competition, delivering services, and purchased order, it would be of great advantage to have a computerized File Maintenance System since it can lessen direct labor cost and other unnecessary expenses. The study conducted by Jonathan Sanchez and Joselito Castronuevo Jr. of AMA Computer University, Makati City entitled “JDB Stock Center and Purchased Account in December 1999” described how most manual counting of stocks could be made easier. Due of the problems that were encountered in a company setting, the researchers came up with the general objective of automating sales and purchase account system. The methods of research used in the study are descriptive, library, creative and prognostic researches. The researcher also used interview, questioners and observation methods to get important information from the target company. Based on the feasibility of the proposed system, the software updated inventory as soon as sales invoice was posted, updated files of costumers, employee, distributors, items, bank and other services, and it can also produce printed records. 2.2 Related Literature Foreign In the year 1999, Mandy Williams published a book entitled “Graphics Interface”. According to him the importance of visual media in expressing ideas and emotions wherein the natural sensitivity and perceptual response of human visual systems are exploited through computer graphics, one can create images that are informative and esthetically pleasing. In the forth edition of the book “Computer Graphic Software Instructions” by John R. Ranken in 2000, he stated that “Computer graphics is a modern visual picture style input-output technology for computer involving the creation, manipulation and display of pictures with the aid of computer”. As such computer graphics represent the most recent development in improving the efficiency of communication between human beings and computer, the modern visualization of pictures by these color graphics rampantly applied in every aspect of our society. In 1999, R. Ritchie, D. Marshall and A. Eardley, the authors of the book “Information Systems in Business” mentioned the potential benefits of information technology. They stated that: “Information techonologist improved user’s efficiency, improved quality of information, greater flexibility and responsiveness to user needs can emerge and increase access for users for all information, increased efficiency, enhanced degree of interaction and improved effectiveness of communication”. The system done by MERGS Consulting in 1998 provided an integrated solution of training, computer systems and performance measurement. The company initiated the process by training a core group of twenty-two employees groups in six teams. MERGS Consulting supported them by producing customer student workbooks, training manuals, and audio visual and video training aids. The clients were hampered by an automated computer system and week manual systems. The results were the lack of an operational locator system. The said group was challenged by the management team to develop a practical, easy to learn easy to use locator system within 30 days and begin training within 45 days. Under these tight time constraints MERGS Consulting developed the conceptual design, detailed specifications and performed the QA/QC role for a computerized locator system. For the first time, the clients had access to an operational put away and pick function. The locator system could only have succeeded with the product in the correct place in the warehouse. The company applied proprietary work effort analysis to develop an optimal location each SKM. After which simplified methodology was implemented in a large-scale rollout. The locator system provided the backbone for cycle counting. Enhance of the design to include several computerized routines were use to simplify the cycle counting process. The system generated and printed a list of parts to count from either a control group or a random list. The client increase customer service while lowering their inventory investment. A Management Information System for Bullion Accounting”, 1992 by Susan Doniz and Rene Lajous (Industrial Engineering). This thesis encompasses the thorough review and study of the Bullion Trading Department of the Toronto Dominion Bank. The review and study of the Toronto Dominion Bank. The work resulted in the creation of an automated Management Information System (MIS) for accounting purposes. This MIS consolidates all of the paper-based information in a PC database (Paradox v3.5). It further provides the means to input Buy and Sell trading transactions and produces management information reports such as: Inventory, Position, and Profit/Loss. The remaining unprogrammed transactions are defined, which the bank will code. (http://cmte.chem-eng.utoronto.ca/library/bachelors.shtml#1992a) An article entitled “Shopping gets friendly with talking trolleys” by Jim Fitzgerald on October 30 2003 that discussed about a talking trolleys in Hawthorne, New York, researchers at IBM recently assembled several of the hi-tech machines for a demonstration at their Industry Solutions Lab in Hawthorne. Among them were the smart shopping cart, a computerized produce scale called Veggie Vision, and a fascinating projection tentatively dubbed the Everything Display. Whenever someone want a piece of fish and makings of a salad the shopping cart can talk to you and suggest about your favorite salad. The shopping cart will know about the salmon that has been bought and can suggest a wine or recipe. Some are being tested in stores while others are in various stages of development. Other companies including NCR, Fujitsu and Hewlett-Packard are also working on similar products, sometimes in partnerships. Most shoppers have seen hi-tech applications only at the checkout counter, With its credit card swiper and bar code scanner. "But now, the number of applications is multiplying and consumers are becoming more familiar with computer interfaces. So there's a lot of experimentation, a lot of gadgets and gizmos, a lot of hi-tech things happening in a lot of different stores." Many of the applications can be used in any retail setting, but grocery especially are "under tremendous pressure right now to create a better in-store experience for their customers or they're going to lose them on price to WalMart,". The smart shopping cart looks like a normal one except for an interactive screen and scanner mounted near the shopper. Once the shopper swipes his store card, his shopping history is available for all kinds of purposes, from presenting a suggested shopping list to alerting him to discounts or reminding Him / her about perishable purchased a month ago. If the customer scans her purchases herself for self-checkout, the cart will know about the salmon she just bought and can suggest a wine or a recipe. The said shopping cart could eventually be outfitted to interact with the shelves so a shopper could see an ad or an offer about chicken noodle soup just as he heads into the soup section. The smart cart raises concerns about privacy for many people. They hope that the cart will emphasized that consumers are free not to use a store card and thereby not have their purchases tracked, and they believes they will find that the convenience out weights the intrusion. Some retailers are shying away from extensive use the store card, also known as “Loyalty card”. On the other hand, consumers have eventually acceding to intrusion for the sake of convenience. Like the E- Z pass, “and electronic pass stuck on the windshield that pay tolls automatically. Every product is tagged with an RFID, or radio frequency identification chip, instead of a bar code. The chips, which don't have to be scanned, would allow shoppers to leave the store without checking out at all and get the bill on their credit card or store account. There doesn't seem to be any controversy about Veggie Vision, a scale for fruits and vegetables that is hooked up to a digital camera and a library of hundreds of pictures of produce. When a shopper puts tomatoes on the scale, the machine evaluates their colour, texture and shape to determine what they are, then weighs and prices then purchase. Not only can it tell an apple from a tomato, but unlike some checkout clerks, it can tell a McIntosh apple from a Red Delicious. The Everything Display is a computerized camera and projector that can flash an advertisement, for example, onto a bare wall in the format of a touch screen on a computer. There is no screen, but when a shopper reacts to the ad by touching a spot on the projection, the camera interprets the movement and the projector flashes the appropriate page on the wall. It turns any wall, or even an interactive display. People react as if it were a touch screen. “http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=31&art_id=qw1067491987779B221” 2.2.1 Related Local Literature Infinity Press Business Corporation is a company owned and managed by a group of businessmen and professionals who are highly competent in their respective fields of commercial endeavor. The inventory system by Randy S. Apigo created in September of 1998. The system dealt with industrial inventory with integrating job estimating executive alert, job costing requirement job routing and job invoicing. The objectives of the study were to provide up-to-date information for improving decision-making and reduction and inventory and to maintain right- operating auditing controls. These objectives helped control inventory levels while maintaining delivery schedules. The system allowed for definite end–of–the month cut–offs for valuation purposes and simultaneously handles day–to–day costing transactions showing the actual inventory values. The system provided additional sub–system, which allowed the maintenance of additional detail under the item master. This included the ability to keep location specific balance and an optional roll inventory in conjunction with the roll inventory module. The system by Paul Benedicta, Raw Material Inventory system in August 1999, it improved inventory cost. The same dealt with raw material inventory integrates with job estimating executive a least job costing requisitions job routing invoicing A.D.C. and purchasing job spoilage accounts payable roll inventory general ledger hazardous waste.
