It was a goal for young adults to try and get a job in a company as early as they could so they would be able to work their way up. At the age of 15 is when most people tried to get in as a courier or in the company mailroom. Performing satisfactorily guaranteed they would hold their job for the rest of their lives. By starting as a courier or in the company mailroom it gave the employee a chance to know the ins and outs of their company. They got the opportunity to learn the company first-hand by slowly working their way through each department. The more departments they went through the more experience they had under their belts which helped them with their technical expertise of their company. The end result was the employee being moved up to a supervisory position, then ultimately into a management position. The workforce of the 21st century is the total opposite.
