Ralph and Piggy’s relationship
...telling the other children that “his real name’s Piggy.” Although it is obvious that Piggy likes Ralph, Ralph seems more laid-back about the ‘friendship” and therefore his feelings towards Piggy are unclear. However, I believe that deep-down Ralph likes Piggy but pretends not to as he is being influenced by peer-pressure. Ralph knows that the other children do not like Piggy so Ralph does not give him authority. In other words, Ralph is trying to please the other children rather than Piggy. A good example of this is when Piggy had confided in Ralph, he told the group that his real name is “not fatty- he’s real name’s Piggy!” Ralph betrays Piggy’s trust just to gain popularity with the rest of the group. On the other hand, Ralph may not actually like Piggy and could be using him for his intelligence. For example, it was Piggy’s idea to use the conch “to call the others (and) have a meeting” but Ralph got all the credit for it. If Piggy had blown the conch then he might have been voted chief, Ralph needs Piggy for his own leadership because Piggy is extremely intelligent and therefore has all the ideas but never gets a chance to announce them to the group. Ralph takes advantage of Piggy’s weakness and vulnerability by stealing Piggy’s ideas and taking full credit for them.
