The perspective of the social ladder can be taken into many different views, such as the first impression or our initial judgment that was passed on a person based on the color of their skin, marrying for security purposes to move oneself up the ladder but within limitations, and lastly the fact of accepting the unchangeable truth of one’s status. Through the eyes and mind of the white man, Enrique, we place our first impression on Sab as a person who is well mannered and does not stand out as a typical slave by his way of talking in castellano and how he was dressed. Once the truth of Sab being a slave is revealed, the treatment as a middle class was automatically brought down to the lower class. Even though his character was exceedingly pleasing, during that time it did not matter how you presented yourself, one judgment was always placed on those who were of color. The journey of Enrique to the house of the daughter, Carlota, of Don Carlos was to seek her hand in marriage. For it was the father of Enrique, who had worked his way up from the bottom and never had the riches handed down to him from heir, so with that he wanted to secure his own future and of his son and have Enrique marry into a family who had the security of heir. Carlota was the prize to be won. This is a typical way that non-color people did to move their own selves up the social ladder.
