Conformity in some aspects of our society is encouraged now because of how our society has been overtaken by consumerism. Because these images are presented to us by something as powerful as the media, movies or advertising, we aspire to fit their stereotypes so we can be more acceptable to our peers. Phrases such as “one economy-sized mum” and “one Anothony Squires-/coolstream-summerweight Dad” describe the stereotypical environment the baby is entering. Dawe is using a cynical tone when he asserts this point, and therefore we conclude that he dislikes the stereotypes placed upon us by the consumerist society.
