Glossary
Guenevere : She is the daughter of Leodegrance, the wife of Arthur, and the lover of his first, best knight. Many tales are told of Guenevere, but the two key episodes in the tradition are Guenevere's abduction by Melwas (or Meleagant or Melyagaunce), and her betrayal of her marriage vows - in the early Welsh tradition, by marrying Medraut (Mordred) after he seizes the throne, and in the French chivalric romances and their successors, by becoming the lover of Lancelot.
Lancelot : He is the greatest of Arthur's knights. Son of King Ban of Benwick, he is known as Lancelot of the Lake or Lancelot du Lac because he was raised by the Lady of the Lake. Among his many adventures are the rescue of the abducted Queen Guinevere from Meleagant, an unsuccessful quest for the Holy Grail and the rescue of the queen after she is condemned to be burned to death for adultery. Lancelot is loved by Elaine of Astolat, who dies because her love is unrequited. Elaine, the daugher of King Pelles, tricks Lancelot into sleeping with her and from that union Galahad is born. His love for Guinevere ultimately brings about the downfall of Arthur's realm.
The Holy Grail : It is generally considered to be the cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper and the one used by Joseph of Arimathea to catch his blood as he hung on the cross. This significance, however, was introduced into the Arthurian legends by Robert de Boron in his verse romance Joseph d'Arimathie, which was probably written in the last decade of the twelfth century or the first couple of years of the thirteenth.
The Knights of the Round Table : In English legend, the fellowship of the knights of King Arthur. Among their adventures was the quest for the Holy Grail. The group dispersed after the death of Arthur. The round table was a gift to Arthur from Merlin after Arthur's marriage to Lady Guinevere.
They had to be knights noble enough to sit at his table. After the knights were seated at the round table, they made a vow to work for only God's purposes. They were to be "gentle to the weak, courageous to the strong, terrible to the wicked, merciful to all men, gentle of deed, true in friendship, and faithful in love."
Some of the famous knights were Sir Lancelot, Sir Galahad, Sir Gawain, Sir Segremore, Sir Gareth, Sir Tristram.
Excalibur : It was the sword given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake. Some sources suggest that Arthur gave it to Gawain. After Arthur's last battle he made Bedivere return it to the water where it was grasped by a hand and drawn under. Its scabbard prevented the wearer from losing blood. When Gawain fought the magician Mabon over the fairy Marsique, she obtained the scabbard for him but it subsequently disappeared.
Uther Pendragon : King Uther Pendragon was the father of Arthur. He was the brother of Ambrosius whom he succeeded as King of Britain. Falling in love with Igraine, he went to war with her husband, Gorlois. During the war, Merlin magically made Uther assume the likeness of Gorlois and in this guise he visited Igraine and became the father of Arthur. When Gorlois died, Uther married Igraine. He died in battle and was supposedly buried at Stonehenge.
Camelot : it was the most famous castle in the medieval legends of King Arthur, and where, according to legend, he reigned over Briton before the Saxon conquest. At Camelot Arthur established a brilliant court and seated the greatest and most chivalrous warriors in Europe, the Knights of the Round Table. Camelot was the starting point of the Quest for the Holy Grail, and by the 1200's, it came to symbolize the center of the Arthurian world.
Avalon :A legendary island where King Arthur was taken when he was mortally wounded. He was taken there by the fairy folk to be tended. Legend has it that he is only sleeping and will return to save England when times are desperate.
In some traditions Avalon is across the spirit border from Glastonbury. One is the mirror of the other. Avalon is in the spiritual realms and Glastonbury is in the physical realm.
There is lots of magic associated with this place.
Arthurian_legends : The Arthurian Legends are a cycle of stories that has been shaped and passed down through over fourteen hundred years of English history.
They relate the legend of King Arthur and his court at Camelot.

III/ Explication de la démarche documentaire
