... less stressful, they can increase focus or endurance, which in this fast paced world can be an asset, and they are a major source of economic activity. They are however dangerous, some even in small doses. Because of this, society sets rules and regulations about the use of drugs and alcohol. These are not always followed however, and this has major implications for many areas of society, such as family life, crime, and health care. While it seems very logical to assume that alcohol and drugs have a function in society, as they help people deal with situations in life, and create jobs, such as drug enforcement and on the darker side, drug dealing, it seems like an excuse more than an explanation. It is no clear how to define what constitutes dysfunction of these substances, because what one person may consider out of control and a problem, may not register as a problem to others. The structural-functional paradigm operates more on a macro level, looking at the big picture of society. It seems that with something as personal and individualized and drug and alcohol use and abuse, it is important to know how people define them. There are many important aspects that are still not addressed by symbolic-interaction however, and that is where the social-conflict theory comes in. The social-conflict theory looks at the power that drugs and alcohol have in society. In the case of drugs and alcohol there is an imbalance in power. The way that society regulates drugs and alcohol clearly demonstrates this in the way that drugs that a...
