New England vs. Chesapeake

The separatist Puritans left England so they could establish a colony based on their religious ideals and to become a model society. John Winthrop proposed how going to America was to conserve themselves and their children from becoming dishonest. He also wanted them to come together and work as a whole so God could bless them for the good they had done (Document A). Everything the Puritans did was based off their religious beliefs. Puritans wanted to purify the church and have a personal relationship with God as well. The general laws were the basis of religion (Document D). Wage and price regulations were also common laws that were justified from the bible and their religious ideals (Document E). They wished for everyone to be equal; they wanted the best for everyone, not just themselves. Winthrop believed that God intended that some families be rich and some be poor; some had high power, and some had none; and he saw all of this to be a part of God’s divine plan. The people of Chesapeake had a weaker religious influence. They established the Church of England, but they were very laid back. Settlers on the Chesapeake came to make money. They were not concerned with family, as they mostly came only with other men, and they did not care as much about religion as the New Englanders. They came to the Chesapeake as an attempt to fulfill their greediness for finding gold and acquiring wealth (Document F).
