Refugees Should Not Be Held in Detention Centers
...le by painting murals and flags on the outside walls, by planting gardens and decorating their airless rooms, nothing can disguise the palpable air of despair'. This is just a small sample of the depression breeding pits that are detention centers. Also, a considerable fraction of the Australian tax payers money goes into these terrible places, costing approximately $50,000 a year to feed and shelter these poor people. 'So where will they go if we take away the detention centers?' you may ask. Well I'm sure many people could come up with many preferable alternates. Perhaps housing commissions, Home-stay Programs or other government programs would do the trick. Maybe the problem is that the prime minister is worried about letting dangerous people into the country. Not only is this idea racist, but can be prevented extremely easily, with a say, six month quarantine, where the refugees can't buy dangerous goods such as petrol, fertilizer and other possibly harmful items, and a weekly check up of where they are staying, in case they are hiding suspicous.. I am not sure why these people are being put 'detention' centers anyway. If I am not mistaken, 'detention' means a penalty for something someone has done. And as far as I can see, these people have done nothing wrong at all, besides risking their leaves to flee from a war ridden country. In fact, Australian law states that it is perfectly legal for someone to enter Australia with false, or no documents at all, as long as they are actually fleeing a country, and not taking a holiday. Another fact is that %84 percent of all 'illegal' refugees are actually real refugees, fleeing the country, protected by International law to, and I quote 'have the right to seek and enjoy a countries asylum.' Yes, thats right, enjoy. And I don't think the refugees in detention centers are really enjoying their stay in sunny Australia, do you? Another popular myth people have taken on board to try and convince themselves that Australia is doing nothing wrong to these people is that Australia is crowded enough as it is, we take in to many refugees already. How mistaken these people are. Not only does Australia have plenty of room as it is, but it takes in no where near as many refugees as other countries, like Tanzania, which hosts one refugee for every seventy-six Tanzanians, and Britain who hosts one refugee for every 530 Brits. Australia only hosts one for every 1583 Australian people. Four years ago, in 2000, 4174 refugees reached Australia...
