When he is at his fathers bedside, half of his face is lit and half is dark symbolizing that part of him has chosen the mob life. Because he knows something is planned to happen to his father due to the lack of staff and security at the hospital, Michael and Enzo( the fathers Baker who showed up to drop off flowers ) go to the hospital entrance to pose as Vitos guards. At this point, the lighting on Mikes face is very little showing the audience that he has most certainly getting into the family business. This is also shown though the halls of the hospital as they are lit, but as he runs out of the entrance the darkness of the night comes over him. Showing only what a far street like gives us. His calmness thoughout this part of the scene, when him and Enzo pretend to hold a gun as another mob car goes by and lighting the cigarette, symbolizes the fact that he is ready for what is to come in the future. this scene is very significant because it is the first sign of the life he has chosen. Michael still has hesitations later on in the movie but the audience knows that he will still go threw with his actions because of this scene. At the beginning of this scene, Michael is briefing how he’s going to kill Sollozzo and McCluskey.
