...ey began to grow distant, as Mitsy’s mother needed her in the time of grief. This is, not only a turning point in the novel, but a defining one. It splits relationships, mends some, and brings a few people closer. Most of the core characters have mixed feelings at this point in time, including Michael Penrose who sells all of his ships and afterwards wishes he still had them. Mitsy and Hartley remain distant until one night of celebration where they slowly, very slow, begin to mend things. Alice and Mitsy work out their differences and slowly drift back together as friends, and the relationship between Alice and Hart can only grow closer as the time goes on. Alice worries about Hart a lot, and knows that he might need her if she does decide to leave, this is about the only time in the novel where their love as family for one and other is shown. CHARACTER REPORT Hartley Penrose Family: Michael (Dad), Ida (Mum) and Alice (Sister) Background: Half English, from his mother’s side, and half Australian, from his father. Hartley’s parents didn’t get along too well, he had family issues at the beginning of the novel with later worked out and he grew a lot closer to his sister. His friends were Mitsy, Alice and later Jamie (Although he liked Mitsy as more than just a friend) Mitsy Sennosuke Family: Zeke(her dad) and Sadako(her mum) Background: Her entire family originated from Japan, although her dad had become accustomed to Australian society, and the language, quite quickly, as did Mitsy. She struggled through life and was looked down upon by the community because of her race, she lost her father to the tragic accident on the “Ida Penrose” which tore Hartley’s leg apart as well.
