...ion on page 1, line 20. Barbarous is also another one on page 2, line 13. Other adjectives that describe the story consist of ghostly, an example on page 2, line 34 “That this was a sprit, not a man”. Another sentence occurs on page 2, line 26 “There was something in the man that daunted me”. In these sentences the author creates a very frightening image in the reader’s mind and this is what Dickens intends to do. The language used in ‘The Signalman’ is very typical of 19th century text. The sentence structure is very different compared to the sentence structure used today. Sentence structures in the 19th century being used in the story include “Said I”. That is very 19th century, ‘I said’ is now most commonly used. Another one is noted down in the novel on page 10, line 41 where it says “He was cut down by an engine”. If this sentence was said today this is what would be said ‘He was hit by the engine!’ the language in the story used to describe the setting is cleverly used. In the story there are two characters with very different personalities and two different roles in the play. First The Signalman, his actions are very strange like when he constantly keeps staring at the gloomy red light. Another action, which is strange about the Signalman, is that he constantly hears the bell ringing even when it isn’t. A crazy decision from the Signalman cost him his life, the strange this is that he waited for his own death, this could mean that he waited for his own death, this could mean that it was a case of suicide from the Signalman, if it was then why did he do it? The tragic death of the Signalman is the key scene in the story because it raises questions from the audience, which is probably what Dickens deliberately did. The death is a plan from Dickens because only two people will know the reason of his death, the audience and the narrator. Talking about the Narrator, his role is very different compared to the Signalman. What the Narrator does is tell the audience what id happening. What Charles Dickens is doing is creating a relationship between the reader and the Narrator. Another role of the Narrator is to create atmosphere and suspense in the story. Mainly his use of adjectives creates this such as damp air, violent pulsation, shadowed or barbarous. Speaking of the relationship between reader and the Narrator, a situation when this occurs is at the end of page 11 in the final paragraph. In ‘The Signalman’ there are a few specific themes, which makes it more interesting. Many themes in the story include it being mysterious, containing the supernatural and death. Also another theme of the Signalman is that it is very inexplicable. What I mean for inexplicable is scenes like when the spectre appears someone has to suffer death. W...
