Pygmalion

...r stays the same when she decides to keep true and pursue Freddy’s affection for her. The transformations she goes through are only on the surface and what Higgins forgets is that that she is also going through changes in her own character that he is not keeping track of. This makes me think that the only thing he is concerned about is his bet with Colonel Pickering. This play is so different in its settings in dealing with time, yet its theme can still be applied to anything today. It’s taking the ugly duckling and turning it into the swan with some assistance. It is like the movie that just recently came out called Miss Congeniality. Though there are definitely different circumstances in dealing with their stories, the principle is still the same. They change on the outside yet the inside is preserved. Searching on the internet, I google searched the name of the play Pygmalion. It came up with a bio for the ancient Greek sculptor and his story was that he spent hours upon hours carving to get his sculptures to be as beautiful as he could by immersing himself in his work. This shows a direct reference to Professor Higgins and his work with Eliza. One of my favorite parts is the beginning when Professor continuously makes fun of Eliza’s cockney accent and her behaviors. Though this is terribly wrong, I still found it quite amusing. His attitude towards the “lower class” is the typical one you find in that era, yet he has some type of sympathy for Eliza for some reason. When he encounters her father Alfred Dolittle, he comes seeking some sort of money, Higgins is turned off by the ideal of his project, yet he proceeds. When the father is leaving he doesn’t even recognize his own daughter. This play to me is a very interesting commentary on the whole idea of changing someone. As stated before the outside changes...
