It only seems possible that she had a poison to drink already hidden or she made one with items slipped in. Women were married at 12 to 15 years of age. Older than that and it was beginning to get too late. The women conveyed property and could often give their family a lift in the social scale. They were also married to seal alliances between families. Even in less social levels, women were traded, to better the family. Marriage gave the women of the Renaissance their first taste of opulence, leisure and freedom. Prior to marriage they were secluded and kept under the closest supervision in the home or a convent.
