He tells about how helpful and convenient the microwave has been for millions of Americans to eat their favorite foods. Now we don’t really want to know all of this do we? It will only make us Chatterjee 2 regret using the microwave so frequently. The reason that makes the Twain piece so brilliant is that it opens up a new world for all of us. A world where we can live all of the time the way we only wish we can live in some of the time. In this world there are no qualms, concerns, or fears. When Twain speaks about his feelings of the river, he was a child, a passenger, and had no knowledge of rivers. So he can admire the beauty of many things such as the sunset or a floating log. After he grows up and learns about rivers he becomes a captain. Than he challenges himself by revealing the harsh realities about the river. He says “ The sun means that we are going to have wind tomorrow; that floating log means that the river is rising…” This is a classic comparison between two different worlds, however, we can only live in one of them. The two authors, much like everyone else, would clearly prefer it where we can enjoy the beauty of a river and the expediency of a microwave without worrying about any dangers. The anonymous author regretfully informs the audience about certain risks that are extremely detrimental to one’s health despite the copious benefits in owning such a product. Twain is implying the same message through remorsefully admitting how he now visions the river in a totally different and pessimistic perspective. Nevertheless, they clearly indicate how important the knowledge is. They also make it understood, that sometimes the intelligence can be just as satisfying as the ignorance. In my opinion, these readings convey a moment of realization that we all must face in life, and I agree with them completely.
