She was a popular seamstress, admired all over the town of Boston for her work. She is confident in everything that does. Hester herself wears poor clothes while she makes wonderful clothes for the people of Boston. The only piece of clothing forbidden to make was a wedding vail. Because the people of the town thought, how could a woman wearing the scarlet letter for adultery, create something that represents marriage. That was considered to be one of her punishments. She interfered in the marriage of another couple. Hester punishes herself daily by wearing Moss 2 the scarlet letter “A” because she knows that she has done wrong in the past and she realizes that it was the right thing to do, was to punish herself. So she wears it with pride. Because of her sin of adultery, she became pregnant. The child, Pearl, was thought to be “a blessing and also as a reminder of her sin.”(144) as she thought that the scarlet letter was enough punishment, Pearl turned out to be “a brat of a hellish breed” who reminded her of her past. Hester had the option to give Pearl to Gov. Bellingham., but she proclaimed that Pearl was her joy and her happiness and refused to let her go. The townspeople thought about reconsidering whether Hester was still worthy of wearing the scarlet letter. They realized what a good job she had been doing and that she suffered enough punishment. The fact that she committed adultery was soon forgotten by the people of Boston and the people in Hester’s life. Later, another meaning for the letter A was that it stood for angel. What once stood for a sin now represented an angel from above in the Puritan life. It wasn’t until the end of the novel that Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale, Hester’s partner in the crime, refuses to go public with the situation...
