...rotector of his wife. In “The Story of Three Girls” men seemed to be viewed as a danger to Marilyn Monroe. In similar fashion the protagonist in both stories felt that both women needed to be protected from harm. Mrs. Mallard’s friends and family gathered around her and with great caution and care in breaking the news to her about her husband’s death. They were aware of her fragile heart and did not want to cause her to become ill. In the “Story of Three women” the two poets were at first surprised to see Marilyn Monroe not with one of her leading men. Once it was determined that she was not with a man the two became angry that she was not with a man to protect her from being discovered by other men. The actions of the individuals in both stories lead readers to think that they felt connected with the women and needed to be their protector. The major difference between the two stories is that one saw men as a comforter and the other saw men as a danger. Mrs. Mallard’s protectors knew that her husband was her world and upon her hearing the news she would be devastated. The two young poets in similar fashion thought that Ms. Monroe’s world would be devastated if she were discovered by man to be in the store. This is also where the differences lie.
