All of this because of her unorthodox obsession over John Proctor. This whole tragedy started when Reverend Parris caught his daughter, along with all of the other young girls, dancing around at night deep within the woods. He observed them dancing around a fire with the Parris’s family slave Tituba, he even thought he saw one of the girls running naked. Although illegal at the time, it was not an unusual sight to see young girls dancing in woods at night time to titillate over fetishes or even at worse having sorts of orgies. Mr. Parris being the priest of Salem, was embarrassed that members of his family should be caught doing such deeds. He interrogated Abigail Williams to find out what they were doing in the woods because his daughter was scared of being whipped and was pretending to be sick. At first Abigail and the others blamed it on Tituba, accusing her of conjuring the Devil and making them drink blood. Tituba confessed to this at the fear of loosing her life. This was the point of realization for Abigail, she could speak the name of any townsperson and they would be sentenced to death or be jailed at the least. Abigail and the other girls said they saw more people with the Devil, they spoke names of any townsfolk that were frowned upon. Eventually, this game of pretense went too far and they started accusing every person they disliked. The young girls of Salem followed Abigail Williams through the whole charade, because she had threatened to murder them while they sleep if they were to slip up at any point. First nobody cared because they only accused those which had no meaning to the town, but soon the accusations started getting carried away. With the help of John Proctor, one brave yet naïve girl even realized that this was going too far and she attempted to stop the charade by confessing to the judge of the high court. However, Abigail used this to her advantage and accused Mary Warren of being a witch and also accused the only stronghold against this whole witch hunt John Proctor. Mary Warren, also from the fear of her life, gave in and told the judge that John Proctor is an associate of the Devil and he made her give a fake confession. This only made the situation worse as Mary Warren was a sort of example to the other girls that anyone who tries to cross Abigail Williams will get it in the end. At this point even the girl...
