...ne calls, e-mails, or early letters, have to be direct and done early. The next issue is poor attendance. We cannot allow students to miss school and not be held accountable. Strict measures must be implemented. We have a form we use for student absences. We need to be more diligent in getting them returned from the student. If they spend four hours studying during their absence, we can count them for a full day of attendance according to the means we use for our distance learners. Secondly, the student’s parents need to be notified when their students are accumulating too many absences. On the fourth absence, the student needs to be warned. On the sixth absence, they will be place on probation. On the 8th absence, they will be suspended for two days and on the ninth day, they will be recommended for expulsion. If a parent or student fails to comply, they will be dropped from our rolls. (I need to look the legality of this to make a further determination.) Along with poor attendance, we need to make serious efforts to improve student’s awareness of their unexcused tardies. When a student receives his third unexcused tardy, the parents will be notified by phone. The call will be documented. On the fourth, the student will then be place on the discipline policy step which will eventually lead to expulsion if the student continues to struggle. The dress code also needs serious attention. One way is to begin the year with the principal meeting students at the door and helping them conform to the code. We can also use a grace period of one or two weeks as students settle in to what is acceptable and what isn’t.
