People become discouraged from criminal activity by this threat. This law puts the small group of repeat offenders who are responsible for a large portion of serious crime in prison. Most importantly, "three strikes" reduces crime by providing a solid and unquestionable prevention to criminal behavior. Basically, a criminal in prison cannot commit crimes against the general public. It is a fact that this has worked. Crime in California fell by 9 percent last year now that criminals are kept in jail. Although the "three-strikes" law might reduce serious crime in the state, the price would be most likely be enormous. That money would have to come either from new taxes or at the expense of other programs. To keep a prisoner in jail would cost so much money rather then letting him back into society.
