All that was coming out of the three soldier’s mouths were, “Let them get over, let them get over!” You get a sense that the soldiers didn’t have the gold on their mind, but rather only cared about the freedom of the civilians. As the civilians closed in on the gate, they were rounded up by the Iraqi soldiers and locked in a 4 sided fence. Civilians were helpless and so were the three soldiers. The main guys in charge of the U.S soldiers were all in the three faces yelling at them about how they were in violation. The three soldiers argued back about how the civilians arrested were going to be killed. What were the three soldiers to do now? This was it, the moment of truth. Seeing how close but yet how far the people were, Archie Gates looked over to Elgin and Elgin gave him a nod. Then as he looked over to Barlow, he gave a nod as well. Gates then yelled out, “We got the Kuwaiti gold!” That immediately sparked interest to the main guys in charge and a deal was then made. They’ll tell where the gold was if the U.S. soldiers helped the people cross the border. In the end, the people crossed the border safely in exchange for the gold. The turn in the movie came when the three agreed to give up the gold to help the civilians to freedom. When you think about it, they could’ve let the civilians get arrested and killed. Even so, once the soldiers serve their sentence, they’ll still end up with the gold in the end. The whole time, the main thing was get the gold and leave, but an attachment was made to the civilians in need of help. In this society, we are taught to help others. In the movie, it came natural to the soldiers. On top of that, a soldier is just supposed to automatically help others when they need it. At least that’s how U.S soldiers were made to be viewed. When the words “We got the Kuwaiti gold!” were said, it wasn’t surprising. You could already feel the words coming and assume they were going to sacrifice the gold once they were stopped at the border.
