The Pilgrims depended on each other in order to survive the harsh conditions and new lifestyle in the foreign land that they arrived. They had to endure diseases, looters, and other dangerous factors. Separation from their homeland, allowed the Pilgrims to slowly evolve into their own society with a slightly different perspective on societal needs and values. As time progressed, the majority of the colonies shifted their support for authority and tradition to individualism and progress. The colonists were outraged by King George III “quartering large Bodies of Armed Troops among us, imposing Taxes on us without our Consent, cutting off our Trade with all Parts of the World, depriving us, in many cases, of the Benefits of Trial by Jury, taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Government…”(pg 66). This pushed the colonists to constitute the “Declaration of Independence” that described King George III failures as a ruler. His inability to fulfill the duties as a ruler allowed the colonists to overthrow him and establish a new government. Soon after, the U.S. Constitution was drafted to form a democracy and to secure the people’s natural rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” (pg 65). Throughout the “Constitution of the United States of America”, the Enlightenment ideals about the government are incorporated. The structure of the new government was based on the checks & balances system and the separation of powers. Congress has the ability to coin money, raise taxes, declare war, and “make all laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execution the foregoing powers”(pg 72).
